Squeezing in some hours in the garage after work last week was difficult. One of the important tasks I had to get done was to cut out new floorboards from waterproof plywood. I already dropped off some smaller parts at the paint shop last week and I also want the underside to the floorboards to be painted with stone-stroke protection paint. As you can see from the pictures the floorboards are split into two pieces. After asking about this in a forum post on the TalkMorgan forum I was told that there is a reason they are split. I was unsure about it and figured that they have been this way to for the last 36year – might as well leave them this way.
Having a rainy weekend saved me from the gardening tasks my wife envisioned. This allowed me to get quite a bit done. On Friday I spent my lunch break to get new stainless steel (metric) bolts and screws. These were necessary to fit the crosshead and engine mounts to the chassis. Since the tie bars where sandblasted and painted I took me a while cleanup the threads and fit them to the crosshead.
I have decided to use stainless steel screws for the wooden frame. But before screwing them in I wanted to get two layers of black paint on the frame. The underside is finished now – the screws are next on my task list for the upcoming week. Another task I wanted to complete before fitting the bulkhead and inner wings was to attached the starter, alternator and some other engine parts. This took the better part of the weekend – fitting them to the car only took a few minutes.
Overall, I am quite happy with the progress I made this week. The weekend was a good reminder that cleaning up parts is one of the more time-consuming tasks during a restauration. I could have done a few of these tasks earlier this year. Whatever car project follows the 4/4 – next time I have the plan to put most of the parts straight into the degreaser and ultrasonic cleaner. And although I improved the “screw-handling” during the disassembly compared to the Mini Cooper last year – I still could improve my documentation and the way I store the parts
