The great escape…

…well sort of….  Ok, not really.  But for the second time this year I left the UK just shortly before the Covid19 lockdown. Back in March it was to pick up my MGB GT from Frontline. Today I was able to pick the overhauled rear axle from JB Sports Engineering.

Just by the looks of the axle Billy Bellinger did an outstanding job. The first comment my daughter made is that unfortunately nobody will ever see this once I am done with the restoration. She has a valid point and the only thing I can do about it is to take some more pictures.

The main reason why I decided to have the axle serviced was that the differential has a significant amount of play. This is noticeable by a distinct “Clonk” when accelerating. Turns out it is difficult if not impossible to get a new one for a Morgan 4/4 – except if you choose a Quaife ATB. While I really wouldn’t mind having this, Andre Koopmann told me that even with the play in the old diff will most likely not fail. And with a look at my budget I had to ask JB just to replace all bearings, coat the axle and to omit the ATB.. 😪

Billy’s father also gave me a used but straight bolt for the rear leaf spring. Both of the old front bolts are bend – one just slightly – the other cannot be used anymore. So tomorrow I hope to get the rear suspension and axle in…
