low tech solution for HiSpec brakes

The new 4pot brake calipers are nice but the rear brake pad hits the caliper mounting bracket. The instructions from HiSpec are generic for any car – for the Morgan it should be made clear that the brake mounts have to be modified. I was unsure about this but friendly fellow Morgan drivers confirmed this to me on the TalkMorgan forum. Using a dremel was suggested but I found it much easier to use a hand file.

Yesterday I did the firste bracket while it was still on the car. Thankfully I replaced the 4 bolts that attach the bracket to the stub axle in order to fit the main spring bearing a while ago. For whatever reason the idea to just take the bracket to the workbench did not occur to me yesterday – today I just took of the brackets. Filing them makes quite a bit of dust – and cleaning this from the car isn’t really fun. Mounted in the vise – it only took 20minutes of fiddling. From roughly 11.2mm material on the bracket I had to file down a notch more than 3mm – to get to approx 8mm. As I did not want to take too much material of the brackets I also choose to take about 1mm from the pad itself. As you can see from the picture I filed down the iron on the corners down to the brake pad material which I did not touch.

I cleaned the brackets and gave them two coats of Hammerit tonight – after two more layers I can hopefully complete the front and brake system this week.
