A Morgan +8 and a 4/4 four seater built in 1984 share some components, But one of the things that is different is the bulkhead. When I visited Wolfgang, who sold me the EzPowersteering, I took a look at his really nice +8. The footwell part of the bulkhead is a bit shorter (approx 5cm) on his +8. I assume that the larger engine requires a bit more room and the factory sorted the problem by creating a different bulkhead. On my car the bracket that the normal steering column attaches to needs to be cut off completely. On a +8 you have a leave a few centimeter to screw the powersteering column to the bulkhead.
From an earlier post you might already have seen that I installed the new steering already. With the steering column I now have the issue that the servo is directly in front of the left vent hole of the heater box. On the +8 you can bent the pipe and make it fit – but on the 4/4 this is not possible. But the servo only covers half of the heater box – so the logical option is to modify the position of the pipes.
The ventilator box is easy to take a part as the four sides are just screwed together. The front panel is 195 by 71mm. Using some 1mm thick aluminum cut-offs from the quarter panel were cut to size using. The holes for the pipes where 36mm – but as I only had a cheap 35mm forstner bit available I used this. I clamped down the panel and drilled a pilot hole. Then I used the forstner bit to slowly “chizzle” away material until I had roughly half. At this point I flipped the panel and finished the holes from the other side. The “rings” that the ventilation hoses attach to were bent around an old fence post and then squeezed into the holes.
Without the plastic hoses attached I panel looks a bit crude. But with a little bit of black paint and installed on the box nobody will ever see this 🙂 Now I just need to get a slightly longer plastic pipe for the left vent and the job is done.
