Sawdust day

It is good to start the day with something that should have been done quite a while ago. When rebuilding the wooden frame of the car I didn’t put the driver’s side latch block back in. The old one is quite bad and I when I ordered the wood from the Morgan factory that the block is automatically included when you order a latch post. It is not. The middle part of the old sill board still had some good ash wood. The total width of the latch block is 32mm.  I cut two 16mm thick pieces and use the copy bit on the router table to get correct form.

As I moved the steering wheel more to the center of the seat yesterday a new dashboard is required. After a quick check that the modified shape fits in the garage I headed back to the woodshop again. While the router table I build is pretty basic it works much better compared to the old one.  Using the old dashboard as a template all holes for the instrument gauges were done using the copy bit on the router. This worked out much better compared to an attempt I made a couple weeks where I tried this with a hand-held router.

As the oil temperature gauge is broken (and frankly not needed) I was going to just cut four 50mm holes. But my wife insisted on a clock and this will move into the center of the small gauges. While preparing a second dashboard (just in case I mess up the first one) the black maple veneer I ordered arrived. I sanded the new dash with 120grid and applied Tightbond 3 evenly on both the dash as well as the veneer. It is my first veneer glue up and I am a bit concerned that I messed it up. The maple veneer is super thin – only  0,6mm. As soon as the glue is applied It tends to roll up.

I used all clamps I had available  – hopefully it is going to be flat.
