For the most part the technical inspection was a success. Nevertheless, I ended up getting a trailer as the car had to get moved out the garage in Solingen today. First thing that came to my mind when I picked up the car is that it looks great. Sure – there is just primer on all panels, interior needs to be done, chrome needs to be polished. In short – there still is a lot to do. But, it was the first time I was proud to have gotton so far with the Morgan restore. Even the traffic jam around the A59 bridge construction could not have an impact on my smile – while a Justin Timberlake song plays the line “take it to the bridge” on the radio…
Before I summarize the problems, I will start with the positive points. Timing belt and distributor are dialed in, the engine is running smoothly. It also starts well – if the battery is fully loaded…. This means that that Weber overhaul was a success – a huge relief. The brakes are also working great (Girling master cylinder overhaul success). Axle alignment has also passed. For the front suspension castor, camber and toe are all within the acceptable tolerance. Rear axle camber can be ignored – there is nothing that can be adjusted on this anyway. Zero degrees on the axle angle (?? the german word is “Fahrachswinkel”) would have been great – but I found older protocols in the documents I got with the car that show that it was always close to the current results. So I am fine with this as well. Best of all – the Morgan passed the TÜV (german MOT) check.
All good – so why did the car end up on a trailer? After the TÜV check one of the new coolant hoses popped off. They initially said I didn’t pull the hose clamps tight enough – but the problem is the short end of the T-connector on the cooper pipe beneath the manifold. This connects to the heater water circuit. Best option is to extend both short ends (cooper soldering required for this…) I also had the wrong cap on the new radiator. The one that came with the shiny aluminum radiator from SiFab doesn’t have valve. It is a cap for an expansion tank and as the car doesn’t have such a tank – it caused a bit of a mess. Cabling was more or less ok but there are a few issues I need to sort. Hazard switch is one of them as the P600a diodes I ordered where not delivered intime. I also need to double check main and dip beams. Main issue on the wiring is that the battery is drained by something. Chasing this done is on the todo list for tonight.
