If somebody would have told me that I might enjoy rebuilding carburetors a while I ago – I would have laughed out loud. Now however, I must admit that there is something oddly satisfying about it. As I can pick up the Mini Cooper engine with the overhauled gearbox this week, it was time to clean the carb. Miffi (the Mini) is 29 years old and has just under 100000km on the clock. Using some brake cleaner on the SU made a big difference already and I could (maybe I should) have left it at this point.
But since I just filled up my ultrasonic cleaner last week with the last bit of SKSonic VR and an original SU HIF44 service kit at hand – I just went ahead and took it apart completely. The design differences (e.g. choke, float, vaporization) between the SU and Weber carbs are remarkable. Both will do there their job, but especially when looking at the little booklet that comes with the service kit – I understand why a lot of MGB owners recommend sticking with the SU carbs. The instructions are good and easy to follow. It seems easier to adjust and tune. Overall the entire rebuild took me 3 hours (including 30min in the Ultrasonic which I used for a drink). The result looks good – I hope it will perform as good.

After using quite a bit of brake cleaner
A brush might have done the trick on the springs…
quite a bit of gunk on the insights
Integrated float (hence the name HIF)
using the 30min brake and let the ultrasonce cleaner do its job
All parts cleaned and dried up
I could have polished the top…but what for?
Still needs paint a cover plate with USB and bluetooth receivcer to fit the old DIN slot in the Mini dashboard (needs to be painted…)

old needle valve . I think it would hvae lasted for a bit longer….
