…. was the question of the day. During my lunch break I was able to pick up Miffi (my Mini Cooper) from a small technical check. While doing the gearbox overhaul last month I also replaced two broken track rods and did the HIF44 servicing myself. While I was more confident that I did everything correctly this time – I still asked a Mini specialist to double-check my work and do a wheel alignment. As the suspension is fully adjustable – I could not figure out how to properly do this.
And while waiting and looking around in the garage full of old Mini’s – the ONE other car there caught my eye: a 1973 (Mk 3) MGB GT. Well, to be honest: I knew that it was there. I had a look at it last autumn when I had just started with putting the Morgan back together. It is in a rough shape, but now the sills just have been repaired – along with the inner wings. It comes with many of the required new panels (beside the floor panels). Hmm – should I stay or should I go now 😊
The lyrics of the Clash song give a clear warning: ”If I go, there will be trouble – And if I stay it will be double”. A scheduled call for work saved me from a spontaneous decision. And as I already spent more time in the garage than anticipated I had to follow the speed limit rules on my way back. This means that on the curvy roads back to Bonn every corner should ideally be taken with the speed suggested on the traffic signs. The corrected alignment on the Mini is awesome now. This is noticeable in every corner you take. My preference for a road Mini is 0,5 negative camber and even on the somewhat wet road surface the Mini handles perfect.
Just after work I got a call from the paint-shop that we could discuss how to proceed with the Morgan. I sprinted to the garage, got the Morgan, and knocked at their door not even 10 minutes later. As mentioned, I had to postpone two already made appointments. So now I need to wait until they can take care of my car. As soon as the garage door opened, I knew – this will not be anytime soon. A Mercedes SL190 from the late 1950th and a Lamborghini Aventador S were prominently parked between a G-class and a few other cars. They only have one paint booth…. Should I stay or should I go now (and find another paint-shop)??? 😊
No – this is not a real question. Stephan and this brother pretty much immediately started trying to correct the right front-wing. Having a shop that is so flexible and that allowed me to drop off small parts over and over is golden to have for a DIY weekend mechanic like myself. But as I correctly expected with the cars in the shop – I must wait until next month before they can finish the Morgan. They also estimate that they need the entire June to finish it – so the planned trip to the UK will also not happen with the Morgan.
Ok – there are some things I can do this month. I still have the dashboard to do on the Morgan. I can prepare some of the interior stuff already. I can take of chrome part and polish them. But let’s face it – the Morgan will be done soon…and in my mind The Clash is singing …. “This indecision’s bugging me”…. “So you gotta let me now”: Should I get the MGB GT as next project or go?
