MGB spring 2021 overhaul part 2

It took a month but finally the shipment from Rimmerbros arrive. DPD returned it them twice without explanation. I asked Rimmerbros to switch to DPDHL Monday a week ago. A day later the customs declaration came in as email. Rimmerbros had a completely filled out way bill attached – but I had to reenter the information on a portal. hmm. Then the package took a detour via Spain. The tracking screenshot below is remarkable. For people that love British classic cars the entire Brexit story is a royal pain in the rear.

Fortunately, Kischka in Cologne had the other spare parts I needed for the pedal-box. Replacing the clutch push rod was the first task and a quick and easy job. As you can see from the pictures the pedal play made the hole for the clevis pin oval. This in turn meant less pressure on the clutch – which was causing issues with shifting. The reason for the pedal play is two-fold. First the upper hole for the clevis pin of the pedal has worn out over the years. I assume that this is caused or at least made worse by the play between the distance piece and the main bolt.

As I was unsure which type of seal-kit my master brake cylinder requires I bought both types. After taking it apart I realized it is the cup type. However the part that was broken in my cylinder is the rear rubber seal. The piece the the seal kit looks different and I hope this is not a problem. To be on the safe side I also order an aftermarket brake master cylinder (just in case). I also forgot to get a second push rod. Somebody welded washers to the old one – I assume to fix an issue with pedal play in the past.

The pedals were powder-coated and I had high hopes that the welded and drilled out the hole of the clevis pin. Well – they did. But it is worse that before. The hole is offset and the weld is only from one side. This needed to be done again. As the Morgan is currently in the paint-shop I decided to visit them. Stephan (the owner of the place) quickly welded the clutch pedal again and drill the 8mm hole of the clevis pin – looks much better now. The new bushes went in easily and after one turn with a 14mm reamer the inner bushes also went in.

While being at the paint-shop I checked out the Morgan. The lower sides of the front wings were straightened out and a few layers of filler have already been applied. A problem that wasn’t really apparent before is the right wing. As I wrote before I already suspected that this side has been pushed in. This was also noticeable when doing left turns as the front wheel would occasionally touch the inside of the wing. This was also corrected but now the headlamp bowl is oval and the chrome ring doesn’t fit anymore. I doubt that the car will be finished this month.

Back at the garage I assembled the pedal-box. Getting it back into the car turned out to take longer than expected. Unfortunately the new stainless screws I ordered from Grove Components in the UK still haven’t arrived. As I can use those on the next MGB project I decided to reuse the old ones. The two bolts that face the wing side of the pedal box took a number of attempts until they finally got in. After the box is bolted down the pedals go in. Next time I will attach the return to the pedal before I tighten the main bolt for the pedal. Doing this in the foot well is more difficult.

Tomorrow evening I install the new brake calipers, a new clutch hose and bleed the system. I also need to replace the cooling fluid and will check the valve clearance again. Maggie needs to get on her wheels again as Mildred (the 1973 MGB GT) will be showing up shortly.
