A monster of a drawer cupboard

A couple days I had to buy some small parts for the Morgan wiring loom (which is a topic for another post). Conrad Electronic is shutting down all their shops and will sell online only in the future. When I saw that they also sell their furniture – I didn’t hesitate to buy a huge metal drawer cupboard for small parts which was offered for 100€.

On Saturday I wanted to pick it up but released that with 165x71x70cm is does not fit in my wife’s Volvo V60. What I didn’t ask for was how much its weight is. During lunch break today my neighbor was so kind and lent me his Sprinter van and his help. When the store manager brought us the cupboard, he asked how we gonna lift it into the van.

At this point we noticed that it weighs well over 200kg. We managed to tilt it into the van onto a blanket and pushed it in laying on its back. After a short drive the idea was to push it out of the van the same way we got it in and just let it stand outside until I could borrow a pallet pumper.

What I didn’t know is that the handbrake of the Sprinter wasn’t functional. And for some stupid reason I did not put the car in gear. The result was that the heavy monster of a steel drawer cupboard pushed the van forward and finally landed on some wooden beams I put under it.

Tonight, I tried to remediate the problem but it was quite a hassle. I could not remove the drawers as the little plastic insert got stuck. I use my engine hoist to somehow get it on some wooden beams. This way I was able to roll it in the garage. While trying to lift is up, the belt tore – but I had some support beams underneath it. It took another 45 minutes to remove all 22 drawers – each around 8kg.After those were out, I was able to lift the base. Just need to find a good spot for it now.
