Upright into the weekend

Luckily, I was able to get a replacement Mini swivel hub/upright/axle stub – whatever you want to call it – from BMC Kestel via mail his week. 40€ for the part sounded reasonable at first. And yes, it has been cleaned and painted – but it is also not short of dents and scratches. Next time I am in the UK I will get a set of new hubs to have them as spares just in case.

I started to clean the to ensure that there is no dirt or paint inside when fitting the bearing races. My plan was to fit the old ball joint as they were just replaced 3 years and approx. 9000km ago. But they already had significant wear marks – so I replaced them with the last set I had in my spare parts bin. While fitting the ball joints I noticed that one of the threads on the upright is damaged badly. It took me a while to fix this with an old ball joint.

Greasing up the roller bearings is the most unpleasant task of the entire job. I made sure to pack as much grease as I could into the bearings – he old ones hardly had any left on them. Fitting on the Mini only took a few minutes. I am sure I would have been able to complete this job in an hour if the old swivel hub would not have been broken.
