Sometimes it is hard to explain why a certain task, project or idea suddenly becomes more important than others. If I take a step back and try to think objectively about which of my open tasks might have higher priority – there are a number of things that come to my mind. But the truth is: I just want to build the engine stand/workshop trolley). I did start my afternoon however with painting the MGB steering parts.
Finding the right position for the engine took a time with my trial & error approach. While the exhaust would clear the side of the frame if the engine were positioned on the middle line – I came to my mind that I should try this with the castors attached. Turns out I need to offset the engine 2cm to make this fit.
To find the right height that allows getting the exhaust pipe below the frame rail, I started by attaching an L-profile so the engine back plate. I want to be able to mount and test an engine without and with gearbox later. It mounted without gearbox – I still will use the old gearbox mounts. So, I attached those to this bracket.
Next, I needed a crossmember that those rubber mounts will rest on. This is 8cm below the top of the frame. My castors are 12,5 cm. As I use 3cm L-profile for the crossmember – I will have 5cm ground clearance on the lowest point. Using the angle grinder, I notch out some parts where I wanted to bend the profile. Unfortunately, on my first attempt I used 45° cuts on the downward bend. I should have used 22,5° twice – as this will form the 45° angle, I need to clear the exhaust. Well, leason learned. The second attempt worked out much better.
I also made measurements for the front mounts. These will follow next weekend.
