Due to Corona and me spending my spare time in the garage, it has been 5 years since we did the last vacation. The expectations and ideas about what location to choose and how a vacation should look like are not always perfectly aligned between partners. My wife wants sunshine, I want wind around my nose. She wants to relax, read and swim – having nothing to tinker around with is a punishment for me. She would prefer to fly; I obviously would like to drive in one of my classic cars.
Marriage is about making compromises. And I beliebe we successfully came up with a cunning plan, where we meet halfway and respect each other’s ideas about what the ideal summer vacation could look like. The result of this 2023 trip plan might look a bit insane on first sight – but I think it will be awesome.
Drumroll please: We are going to Brindisi, Italy !!!
You might ask why I make a big deal about it and even write about it here? Well, we drive down there in the Morgan. A round trip of approx. 4000 kilometers in a car that I has not been driving more than 150km since I restored it. In fact – my open task list for the car is still quite long. But now there is no turning back.
On our way we will stop in Munich, Bozen, Siena, Neapel. Taking the trip to Munich aside, each day will be between 400 and 500km. I already used some recommendations about trips to Italy from the MGDC forum. We will avoid the Brenner and drive via Nauders to Bozen. We will stop in Florenz, visit Pompei and drive along the Amalfi coast. In Brindisi we booked a lovely place to stay, and my wife should be able to read a few books and enjoy the sun.
After 2200km it is recommendable to grease the front suspension on the Morgan anyway. Heck, in 9 to 10 days, I should be able to do a full service on the front suspension easily and clean up the car as good as possible for the way back 🙂
The ~1800km back will be divided into three lags – Brindisi to Paesaro, onwards to Luzern and from there on back home. The prep work on the Morgan will start this weekend. In parallel I will also make sure that Maggie, my MGB GT, is ready as backup. If she only had a sunroof…… maybe I should put on the one I have for the other GT ???
As you might be able to tell – I am already excited about this journey.
