We have made it to York and are hopeful to get to Edinburgh tomorrow. However – it is not all smooth sailing. The first 600km of the post-restoration maiden voyage of C6622 to London went really well. It took just under 5 hours to get to Coquelles – traffic jam around Brusss and two breaks at filling stations included.
Besides an issue with the indicator stalk (it needs to be bend a bit more) I was more than happy that everything appear to be working fine. Suspension, wheel alignment and centered wheels make a much better handling and drive comfort than before.
Due to the speed limit in the Netherlands, Belgium and France I had a superb average fuel consumption of under 7l per 100km. In the UK it went up a bit to 9.5l – B roads and City driving account to this – still acceptable. I dropped off my MGB rear axle at Hardy Engineering. This is the axle I had some issues with and it will be rebuild with a Limited Slip Differential.
While driving on the motorway I already noticed in some occasions: the engine does not feel like it is developing full power. Overtaking is a bit slower than I like to go and in stop and go situation it sometimes feels not responsive when starting to accelerate in 1st gear. Fortunately, it was all working when driving through London traffic. We had to go from Kingston-upon-Thames to Stratford. If you check the map: all routes on this tour suck somehow.
The new thermostat I got from Europaspare is not working at all. I checked with the Multimeter and the gauge is faulty. After putting back the old gauge in – the temperature normally shows 90°C but the reading is much too high. The Revotec kicks in automatically at 88°C at which the gauge shows more than 110. As I added a manual override switch for the radiator fan – I kept this on for the entire drive through town. And this works like a charm.
We had a fun evening with my son friends on a cool roof-top bar in Stratford – what will happen to many of our cars was displayed there as well🤔
The next morning we switched seats and my son drove us to Cambridge. We wanted to cover some distance early – but as soon as we got onto the Motorway we had another power-loss – exactly like I had on Tuesday.
Bishop’s Stratford and Melywn Rutter Workshop were close by – and we somehow made it there. While I bought quite a few parts there – we of course were complete strangers to Melywn, but the greeted us friendly and let me us a few tools from his workbench. There are dozens of Morgan’s at his dealership and none of them is identical to another car. I know that the new Morgan Threewheeler does not win everyone heart – but having seen it now in real I must admit: I am a fan of it.
But I had no time to look too closely – I had to fix C6622. And indeed – there was more debrie and dirt in the carburettor. No idea were this is coming from. The fuel filters are both OK. It must be from the when I cleaned it in the Ultrasonic or the fuel lines.
After this the Moggi ran great for a few hours and we had the plan to have dinner in Newcastle upon Hull. We took mainly backroads and drove for hours. Then all of the sudden – very brief moments where the car losses power – but usually resumes to a running state right away.
20miles to Hull it became worse and we stopped at the Shell gas station. This time I even took the top assembly of the Weber, cleaned the pump jet and Venturi with WD40. 15min later we were good to go again but decided to head straight to York.
It was getting chilly and we put the heater on for the first time in ages. The uprated heater matrix from Sifab was a great investment – paired with the heated seats driving in shorts and T-Shirt at 10°c outside temperature is no problem at all.
When we parked in York however – a new problem became visible: the heater valve leaks when it is in the open position. Closed it is water tight. Fingers crossed for the remaining tour
