It is more than a month ago that I (kind of) finished the rear-axle swap on Maggie. And it is frustrating that she is still sitting in the garage in axle stands. Just before I had a business trip to London in mid-January – I noticed that I have the wrong handbrake cable. The width of the wire-wheel tube axle is different to the one for the bolt-on wheels. This was one of the parts I picked up from Moss along with several other spares.
But due to my Covid infection I did not get around installing the right hand-brake cable right away. And time was limited the last two weeks ago as my job kept me completely occupied. When I finally had a chance to get to the garage – I ran into issues. I have changed hand brake cables a few times now – but no matter what I tried – I could not get the handbrake adjustment right. And other business trip on the would mean further delays. At least I managed to watch John Twist’s MG Tech episode 325 again while waiting at an airport. This is where I found a clue on what I should look for. In the video he mentions that the new rear brake adjusters are sometimes smaller/shorter.
Back at the garage a few days later I took the newly overhauled rear brake assembly apart again. And for sure – the completely maxed-out new adjusters only spread out 44mm wide. The old ones, from Maggies original rear axle, extend to 50mm. And after some testing and measuring I determined that I need 45mm at least to get the hand brake adjusted correctly. The old adjusters need to be removed and will replace the new ones I bought. This was two weeks ago and I only had time to change one side so far.
The only other thing I managed last week was dropping of the Mildred’s 18V581 engine in Cologne. More on this in the next blog post.

Oh dear every day is a school day eh?
