Taking the bus

Thanks to my colleague Artur in Poland, I was able to continue with my Morgan’s wiring loom. As mentioned before, it was impossible to get MTA Uni F630 bus connectors. Artur was able to order them in Poland and forwarded them to me. Jestem ci winien piwo, Artur. These are fuse box connectors which perfectly fit my preferred MTA fuse holders and allow power distribution within the fuse box. But one thing I did not think about before-hand: How do you crimp the cable to the bus connector?

Fortunately, one of the cheap crimping pliers I have allowed me to screw in the pressing insert reversed – so that the cable can be crimped on one end of the bus connector. As I did not want to have the connecting metal exposed on the underside in the fuse box – I tried fitting shrining tape. This did not work out. But electrical tape did the job. The two brown cables (unprotected 12V) run from the starter to the fusebox. These are beefy 84/0.30, 6.0mm² type wires than can handle 42A each. They distribute the current via seven fuses to the relays. Additionally, I distributed four purple relay switching circuits (eg. flasher, brake switch, fan, lighting) from the fuse as well – the current required for the switch is so minimal that it can be ignored.

The first relay is the ignition relay. All former white cables (ignition circuit without fuse) are now fed back from the ignition relay to five fuses. Three fuses feed all green (ignition circuits with fuse) cables – now including the carburettor idle solenoid, choke, wiper and so on. Two fuses are for the heated seats. The remaining four fuses are for interior and parking lights, Powersteering (with own cable to starter) as well as two AUX fuses for Bluetooth, USB chargers and Brantz International Pro trip master.

Sorting out a tidy wiring between the relay and fusebox tooks a while. Overall it is much cleaner compared to last year. Another test fit was required to improve the cable routing to the left front of the car. All in all a good step in the right direction. The bus connector for the MTA fuse box was a “missing piece”. There is still plenty of stuff left to do, but with a bit of luck I can complete the Morgan wiring by next week.
