Back on the road

The last weeks have been extremely busy. Business travel to Zurich and Berlin kept me from my garage. The only reminder of my cars was that I ran across MGB GTs on both trips. In Zurich a nice dark green GT with the recessed shark mouth grille (so 1971/1972 I think) and in Berlin a nice tartan red Chromebumper model.

Rewiring C6622 was successful, but the clutch adjustment question kept me occupied. It took a number of attempts and changes – but as of this Monday evening I am quite confident to have an improved and correctly working setup. I already have a draft of a longer post specific to this topic that will follow shortly – if my confidence will not crumble to pieces later today.

A longer test drive with my wife worked out fine – which is an improvement. The last couple years every time I say: “yes, i am done and we can take the Morgan” – something usually comes up as soon as she is driving alongside. Well, on the trip I noticed that on higher revs the car cuts out. A quick check of the spark plugs showed that is running a bit lean. Opening the fuel mixture screw in the Weber 32/34 DFT carb fixed this issue.

The temperature gauge installed last year also worried me. It usually shows 100 degrees and will go up to about 120 degrees Celsius. But the engine does not seem to be that hot. The Revotec electric fan kicks in at 84 degrees – the smith gauge will show about 110.  A quick check with a “laser thermometer” (not sure what the right English term for this would be) proved that the Smith gauge is just off.

We are now ready for our summer road trip. For the next three weeks I hope to post trip reports rather than repair notes. 😀

  1. Tim it all sounds good well done!!! Anything electrical made by Smiths has always been known for er very hit and miss quality lets say. When I worked in the UK car industry many moons ago even then Smiths stuff was often awful so it seems like things have not really changed!!!

    1. I know that Lucas has the reputation for being the Prince of Electrical Darkness – didn’t know that Smith also has a questionable quality.
Once I am back home I will spend some time on checking the resistance of the temperature sensor. I think the gauge can also be calibrated.
But for now-knowing that the gauge is showing about 10 to 15 degrees more gives me piece of mind.

      1. You get great satisfaction from a long trip in the car that you have brought back to life. Me too. I have 3 mature motorcycles plus a mature car and i get a kick from looking after them and of course longish trips.

      2. Don’t forget that Britain used to have the Commonwealth. We manufactured old cars and sold them anyway. So we did not need R and D and Quality Control. Stupid arrogance put the UK car industry into the dustbin.

      3. Haha, when you write this and look at the German automotive industry right now – a song of the Propellerheads pops into my mind: History Repeating
