After fixing – or actually rebuilding – the left inner sill a number of test fittings and smaller repairs had to be done. Especially the left front door post required some thought. While we did have an entire BMG door post as replacement at hand – the decision between replacing and repairing had had be thought through. Replaceing requires a lot of work on the top part of the post on the MGB GT – an area which is in quite good condition on this shell.
Therefore it was best to remove the top layer of metal on the hinges side of the post. The post consist of multiple layers of steel tacked together with a number of spot welds. The bottom part connecting to the sill as well as the areas behind the hinges was rotten.
A positive surprise was that the second layer to metal had almost no rust and was easily cleaned. Fabricating a new front was much easier than replacing the entire post. After removing the surface rust on the inner sill and applying a bit protection for the next weeks, the membrane followed. I was not around for most of the work. When I stopped by the next day the left outer sill was already welded in.
Tonight I am heading to the UK for work and to visit my son. On my way I will pickup a few more panels. After some consideration both rear side panels (HZA578 and 579) will be replaced. This adds further costs but it makes the next repairs especially on the rear wheel arches easier. It will certainly look much better an will need less filler and finishing work later down the road.
