After a long and busy week, I managed to get to the garage at 5pm today. And I ticking off items on the Morgan issue list one by one. Today I started with the Lucas 1130 sidelights. The bulb holder insight the lights have a short piece of cable. While trying to reconnect it after I reinstalled the loom, the cable broke off right at the bullet connector a few weeks back. I tried welding on a new piece, but the old copper in the cable was black and brittle. Two new holders (Lucas part no 574383) arrived earlier this week. I soldered on 40cm of additional cable so that I can finish the wiring under the front wing.
While having the front wheel off, I also removed the steering damper blades. When refitting the front suspension, I added the roller bearings. A fellow Morgan owner in the US pointed out a discussion on the TalkMorgan forum about this topic. Simon suggested to remove the damper blades, and this is what I have done now.
Next up was to check why the ignition warning light doesn’t work anymore. Light bulb is OK and the wiring is OK. Strange…. t was working when I had the old generator. After taking the generator heat shield off, I noticed that that that the connector pin was slightly bend – so there wasn’t even a connection for the brown-yellow cable. This must have happened when I installed the generator back at VGS in Cologne. Stupid little mishap – sorted now.
Next, I made sure that the earth points on the bulkhead have a good connection. I used a bit off sandpaper to clean the areas around the screw heads just to be on the safe side. Speaking of earth connection: This was also the reason the Smith temperature gauge was showing to high values. I bought a new voltage stabilizer for the car and ruled and was confident that it was working. But when checking the voltage, I saw that 12.2V are getting to the gauge. First, I thought that a small piece of clear tape left on the back if the stabilizer caused a bad earth connection. But further checks revealed that the new stabilizer is not working correctly. Over on the MGB forum Marc suggested a LM2596S DC Step Down unit. As these are dirt cheap and quite practical for a few scenarios, I ordered a few of them last week.
