MGB seat rails upgrade

Last weekend I had travel up north. The plan was to take the Morgan and enjoy the sunny weather. However, a minor technical issue (loose starter cable-shoe) and the fact that I had to take our dog (Friedmann) along, made Maggie the better choice. On short trips Friedmann is usually fine with sneaking into the foot well. But when I tried moving the passenger seat, the seat rails got stuck. As I did not want to waste the morning with fixing this, I just took out the seat. That provided plenty of space for a dog.

None of the MGBs I drove had free-moving and easy to handle seat rails. The original seat slide set I added in 2018 worked to some extend for a while, but even after applying grease it is not really working well. Looking for alternatives I stumbled across universal seat rails on Ebay. But none of the pictures had really detailed measurements. On “Kleinanzeigen” I found a cheap, unused pair and decided to give it a go.

To my surprise two of the holes on each rails match up with the mounting holes in the MGB seats. With the new rails attached to the seats I tried to determine the best position on the floor. A previous owner of my 1967 MGB GT ripped large holes into the floor panels. Someday, this will be addressed and fixed, but not right now. I also did not want created more damage and drill further holes. I opted to replace the wooden spacers beneath the seat rails (I only had parts left on the drivers side) by a 40x500x6mm metal bar. Drilling and tapping the holes took a bit longer than I expected, but after close to two hours I was able to start mounting the seats back into the car.

While the passenger side worked fine – the measurements for the driver side (which I thought to be identical) are 3mm off. Regardless of this, I was able to do a test fits tonight. Now it is quite easy to adjust the seats. A lever that is right under the front edge of the seat can be lifted quite easily. The rails have about 18 cm of travel . Last thing to do is to paint the rails and install the carpet again.

  1. Well done you, keeping these classics alive!! My Dad bought a new MGB GT back in about 1966 I think, British Racing Green with Overdrive wowowow. When he came home from work I would sit in the car for hours!!!

    1. Maggie (the 67 GT) is quite a runner. She isn’t perfect, has some small dents, scratches and a bit of rust – but with the uprated Frontline suspension and 118BHP – she easily does 185km/h on the Autobahn not even being close to the max rev in 5th gear.

Hopefully project Mildred will be similar with a bit more quality.
