Mog49 Tour and the long way back

I missed to post updates here the last couple of weeks – there was just not enough time. But that does not mean nothing happened – Miffi annual service, a few repairs on the Morgan, the Zoo Rallye in Cologne and a few tasks kept me busy.
Two weeks ago I attended the Mog49 tour in Bad Essen with the Morgan. The weather was perfect for a tour and the Morgan happily did the 250km on the Autobahn without flaws. As on the trips before – it lacks a bit of power. Before the restoration is responded much better to the throttle. Usually I keep the engine between 3000-3500rpm in 4th gear – 5th gear only really makes sense downhill – uphill the car loses momentum.

On Saturday I copiloted on Frank’s and Sandra’s Morgan Plus8 and parked my Moggi at the location for the afternoon trial. The organiser came up with an incredible route – navigation was done according to simple written instructions with mileage specifications – nothing challenging and I would say to handle for everyone.

After a nice lunch break, we headed to farm with a huge well-prepared lawn for a regularity event. The driver had to follow a course across the lawn and set the base time (at any speed of choice). Afterwards the navigator had to try to match the time – without knowing the exact time. But I assume most teams somehow stopped the time anyway – otherwise difference below one second are either luck or hard to explain.

We took my Morgan for the regularity and ended up too slow – so we got the last place – but it was just for fun anyway. As I wanted to get back early, I headed back at 5pm for the approx. 2h drive. But as I forgot something I had to return after a few min and was a bit late on my way back now. So, I tried to catch up time and pushed the Morgan a bit more on the Autobahn. Initially 135 to 140km weren’t a problem. But after about 30min  shortly before Münster when accelerating out of a section with a  80km/h limit the Moggi did not respond well to the throttle.

It did not have any misfires, it more felt as the engine would not get enough fuel. At a speed around 90km/h and about 2600rpm it still drove all right. But after a while the engine temperature started climbing. I stopped dozens of times and let the engine cool down. Somehow, I made it home.

Back in the garage I checked the fuel system first. I was somewhat surprised of the particles found in the prefilter of the Facet fuel pump. The pump is located in the right rear wheel arch. The Malpassi fuel filter were looks like new. Nevertheless, measuring the fuel pressure a manometer on the regulator initially showed only 0.1 bar (not enough). I repeated the test right behind the fuel pump, and it happily delivers 0.35bar. After blowing air through the fuel pipe and cleaning the regulator top, the carb got the required 0.3bar. I need to build a protective cover for the facet to protected better.

Even though I check ignition timing not too long ago – Frank pointed out that overheated can be caused by a late ignition. And sure enough – static timing was slightly over 16° instead of 12°. The new Motomobil distributor I bought is only held in place by two M6 screws. The only explanation I have is that I did not tightened it down properly and the rough ride across the lawn must have contributed to since. I marked the correct position earlier and the lines I made were clear not aligned anymore. With that out of the way, the engine ran somewhat better – but still lacked power and started to overheat after 30min.

After a bit of research online, I found various forum posts that kind of indicate the exact problems. A Panther Kallisa owner (same Ford CVH engine with Weber 32/34DFT carb) also serviced his carb, had the same issue and ended up replacing the DFT. On a Ford XR forum a few threads suggested that the 32/34 DTML is a straight replacement. As I could not figure out the problem (I must have introduced when servicing the DFT) I finally gave up and got a replacement.

The installation is quite easy. It came with two heat isolator blocks. One should be under the heat shield, one above. The instructions also mention that the package includes longer studs for the manifold – unfortunately those were missing in my package. I ended up without the one under the heatshield. The fuel return port is almost blocked by the carb heatshield – I have to bend this back a little. Downside of the DMTL is the manual choke. But it was easy attach beneath the dashboard.

The first 30min test drive tonight showed quite an improvement. The engine responds much better to the throttle, 135km/h on the Autobahn were achieved much easier. Even in 5th gear the car responds now. While driving the engine temperature is between 80 and 90°C on the Smith (bestguess) temp gauge. It will rise up to 90 and more at traffic lights and in city driving. Much better than before. I think my mixture setup is ok – the spark plugs are not white and the Colortune check looked alright. But it is not really perfect. It is hard to describe and put in words. It feels like a vibration, like the engine could deliver more but it still needs more fuel. I guess the current status is not the final solution….
