Summer 2024 trip plan

It is just a few weeks ago that our oldest daughter got the confirmation for a short term international assignment from her employer. And we are happy for her that this is one of the locations she always wanted and live and work: Barcelona. Naturally, we quickly had the idea to visit and spent a few days with her. Over the last two weeks the plan developed to connect this with our summer vacation. And as our Bonn-Brindisi trip in the Morgan was a blast – why not do something similar again. And why not combined a ferry ride to one of the islands that German tourists love the most?!

Therefore the 2024 tour will be: Bonn-Beziers-Barcelona-Balears !

Not all details have been finalized yet. The time will be between May and end of July. A few factors will determine the exact point – accommodation requests we have just sent out are one of them. We will also decide on which car we are going to take a bit later – both Moggi and Maggie are a possibility. Mildred won’t be finished anytime soon. And for reasons unknown to me, my wife rules out 3000km round trip in a classic Mini Cooper…. 🙂

Route planning has already started. On Day 1 we will head from Bonn to Lyon. This is the longest section with about 700km and it will be motorway only. It makes sense to break this down in two parts and Nancy is almost in the middle – perfect for an extended lunch. Somewhere between the central Marché Central de Narcy and Place Stanislas. There are a few hotel options in and around Lyon. City center is the more likely choice.

On Day 2 we will leave Lyon towards Givors and then take the scenic route. There are four nations park that seem to offer stunning roads. “Parc naturel régional du Pilat” – “Parc naturel régional des Monts d’Ardèche” – “Parc national des Cévennes” and “Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc”. My intention is workout a roadbook with map print out – similar to what I received for the LeJog. The tricky part is to find the right balance in terms of route and distance.

As we have been to region between Narbonne, Perpignan & Figueres a few times before, on Day 3 we will take the motorway to Girona for a breakfast stop. Intention is to arrive in Barcelona by late noon and then spend two nights over there with our daugther. There are multiple ferry options and the trip takes about 7 hours. After 7 to 10 days we will get the ferry back to Barcelona. The way back needs to be determined yet, but the idea is to get to Avignon after the ferry arrives. I tend to add a night in switzerland again – we will see about this. Really looking forward to this – having this marked in the calendar already generates good vibes.

  1. Tim this sounds like a great plan to me!!! Like you I love France and travelling thro France. I have a Telepass which is just a box you fit onto your windscreen and the box is connected to the motorway barriers plus your bank account so avoids having to queue and to find the money. Mine is a European Telepass so works in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal and I have used it loads of times and it is a real bonus on a long trip. Ps I personally would avoid Switzerland simply because they have truly draconian ways of fining motorists so beware!!!

    1. Hi Simon. Good idea. Last year we spent quite a bit of time in toll station queues. Is the box bound to one vehicle or can it be swapped?
If we take the Morgan I am not concerned about fines in Switzerland – ours is not a particular fast car. The MGB GT on the other hand would be in a danger zone for sure😂

      1. AND I have used the same telepass box also on other cars and bikes NOT officially registered to that box and everything worked. I think that they just want the dosh to be honest hahahah.
