When I left work late for the garage at 8pm tonight, I just wanted to finish cleaning up stuff that was left from last weekend’s job. But with a completely empty workbench motivation to work on the Mini was back. There wasn’t a lot left to do. In order to get to the right hand side tower bolt – the wiper motor had to be removed. And as I had to disconnect the brake lines anyway – I went ahead and removed the brake servo as well.
After the tower bolts were out I secured a piece of old wood with two M12 bolts through the holes for the brake lines (which I removed earlier). With the engine hoist ropes around this wooden board, I removed the front and rear subframe bolts. What you can’t see in the pictures is that I also initially had a jack and second board underneath the subframe. This was just a precaution as I used the hoist method for the first time – but it turned out to be unnecessary.
The entire removal took less than an hour. I am glad that I addressed this now. This was my first complete restoration project eight years ago and all in all it held up ok. Especially, that I used Miffi a lot during the winter. There is some fixable rust on the subframe. If I would have waited for another year or two – I am sure it would not be as easily fixable as it is now.
Some suspension parts still need to be removed. More on this later this week.
