When rebuilding an engine or overhauling the suspension of a classic vehicle there is a point when you need to order new parts. And often enough there isn’t a single choice – you think about options. Should I can an upgraded camshaft? if so – which vendor? What would it cost if I choose components from vendor A or B? Like many of us I used to track this in a spreadsheet. And this is a great way of handling this topic. But with AI it is easy to convert this into a little application on my website.
You will now find the “Rebuild Calculator” in the top navigation. Right now it is configured to display my current Mini Cooper engine rebuild project as an example. In this project the options for MiniSpares, Swiftune and MED Engineering are preconfigured. I have created a structured template format that can be used for other projects and in the soon future you can use if to create your own templates.
It is designed for PC / web browser use – on a small mobile phone screen it will be great to use. The option fields allow drag and drop from user sites and the site will try to automatically determine the price of the part you dropped. In addition to the three options from the vendors I look at, there is also the possibility to save links from other sites in the “Your Configuration” section.
With the save and load features you can store your configuration on your local machine and come back at a later time to work on it. Each category allows adding/removing/editing additional items. In addition to parts there is an option to toggle on Machining, which will give you the total rebuild cost. I am curious what parts and engine configuration you would choose – so there is an option to submit a configuration. If you decided to do so – I will get an email notification and will see your recommendation.
Give it a spin and let me know what you think.
