Time flies. The work on Mildred’s shell lay dormant for almost a year. In the last post MGB Bodyshell (4): Progress and Problems back in November 2025 the wing and door fitting was the next step to be done. Today start with a call before breakfast. Imperial Thread cutters were needed as work on Milded finally resumed. And due to the new wings and door skins getting the panel alignment right is not as trivial as it may seem.
We left off trying to get the doors and rear of the wings set correctly. No matter what they tried – the new wings were about 3mm too far out. After some back and forth the decision was made to drop the T-shaped metal piece between the wing and the body just in front of the A-post. This solved the problem of getting the door skin aligned. I also like the somewhat cleaner look – closer to the Frontline cars but without seam welding the front wings.
Next up was the panel gap between the wings and the bonnet. Without the chrome front grill things were looking pretty good when I got there from work in the late afternoon. The bonnet sits flush with the body for the most part and the gap to the body is good. After installi the grill we got to a point where the gap between grill, left wing and bonnet is working fine. Minor adjustment of the wing in the upper corner of the arc for the grill is needed.
But the right wing caused headaches today. First it didn’t fit at all on the A-pillar. But it needs to come down a bit further in the front. This hopefully works out tomorrow. The door skins will follow along with the tailgate. With the doors in place both rear sides/wings will be completely replaced as well and required repairs of the rear wheel arches will also be done. More on this next week?! 🤞
